Question:

Can transportation issues excuse jury duty?

Since the jury duty summons is from another county what if I told them my car isn't working and my husband and I have to share a vehicle right now? He works in the opposite direction of the courthouse and it would be a two hour drive for him in the morning and then another two hours to pick me up and get home.

  1. absolutely NOT....you can call and have your date of service postponed but transportation issues are not an acceptable excuse in any state that i have ever heard of.

  2. one can contact the court clerk and ask about transportation issues.the notice has the number listed.

  3. I don't think that logic would pass muster. If you are within the jurisdiction of the court which is calling for jurors make up your mind to show up. Being there doesn't mean you will be called. They may tell you to take a bus.

  4. no

  5. No you have to serve, take a bus, take a cab, but get there.

  6. In my state (Nebraska) they would probably post pone it, but I doubt they would let you off of the hook.

  7. This would not be an acceptable excuse.   "You get the rights and privileges of citizenship so you must assume the responsibilities of that citizenship." Direct quote from Judge to another on my jury panel.

  8. Your jury summons usually lists the reasons that are accepted for declining jury duty.  Age and infirmity are good.  Lack of transportation is not so good.  I would call the clerk of court and see what can be done to delay the duty until you can get your vehicle out of the shop or replaced or whatever.

  9. I think so.
