Can travel to France with a recently expired passport?

I am travelling (by car) to france from the UK on the ferry just for a few hours. My passport expired on the 6th of August this year but i have a valid driving license without a photo. will I be able to get there and back with this ID?

  1. Expired is expired, but there are situations when you can get an 'emergency travel document'  these are issued on a case by case basis.  you will have to talk to the UK passport office and explain your situation and see if they can issue this to you.  

    if you are a UK citizen? then that is pretty much all you have to worry about, but if you are staying in the UK with a foreign passport than you will need to get your passport renewed asap from you specific  embassy and a visa to france.  but most countries ask for a minimum of 3 months on your passport.
