in media preparation, why we need to autoclave the media?describe also the principle of sterilization by autoclaving..

As the previous answerer sais to remove contaminants which would also grow on the nutrient medium.

Autoclaving works on the same principle as pressure cooking. Water is heated to 121oC at 15lb per square inch pressure for 15 mins. This temperature and time is requires to kill resistant endospores which can survive normal boiling at 100oC.  Steam condenses on the contaminant cells and they are killed by heat shock
