the floor of a 17 ft. by 13 ft. sun room is tiled with tiles that are 1 ft. cubed. The tiles alternate between black and white. If there is a black tile in one corner of the room, how many black tiles will be needed in all?

  1. 17 x 13 = 221 divided by 2 colors, black and white equal 110 each and a extra tile left for either white or black

  2. I would say, 110.5, (111) unless that one black tiles not counted, then 110. 17 times 13 equals 221. Since that is the area, that would cover the room, plus, the tiles are one foot. If the area is 221, then you need to divide by two to get your black tiles.

  3. its pretty easy for a good mathmetician like me

    17 x 13 = 221 divided by 2 colors, black and white equal 110 each and a extra tile left that can be black or white

  4. On one side, there will be 13  rows of black and white tiles, and each row consisting of 17 tiles. If the first tile is black there will be 7 black tiles in that column and 6 black tiles in next column, 7 in next, 6 in the next and so on. On the whole there will be 9 columns of 7 black tiles and 8 columns of 6 black tiles. Total black tiles would be

    9x7 + 8x6 = 63 + 48 = 111

  5. Okay, 17 x 13 ft is 221 sq. feet (not cubed, squared).  So you're going to need 221 tiles altogether.

    If there's a black tile in one corner of the room, that means that all four corners are black tiles.  Because there's an odd number of feet in both directions.  If there was an even number, one end of each row of tiles would be black and one white.  But with odd numbers each row starts and ends with a black tile.

    So let's look at it a 13 rows of 17 tiles each.  Each odd row had 9 black tiles and 8 white tiles.  Each even row has 9 white tile and 8 black tiles.  (Whew! My head hurts!)

    So that's 7 rows with 9 black tiles and 6 rows with 8 black tiles.  7*9 + 6*8 = 63 + 48 = 111 black tiles.

  6. answer: 111 black tiles

    17 tiles across, with a black one in the corner that means on the first row and everyother row thereafter there are 9 black tiles, for the rows starting with a black one and there are 7 rows like that 9 times 7 is 63. For the rows starting with white there are 8 black tiles in each row and are there are 6 rows starting with white  8 times 6 is 48 then you add the two together and get a total of 111 black tiles.

    Easiest way for me to explain it would be  to draw out  17 tiles across and 13 down and multiply!!! Hope it helps

  7. ZERO..............a room is calculated out in Square Feet/Metre measurement.

    a tile that has been given a Cubic measurement won`t go into the room.(un-less you want a raised surface)

    squared = 2 dimensional  ,   length x breadth.

    cubed  =  3 dimensional   ,   length x breadth x height.

    no answer is going to be correct , un-less you admit to the typo?
