  1. if you really want to toast your amp go ahead...

  2. As long as you match the impedance to the amp you can do anything you want. If you want to run 12 speakers in a 7.1 plan go ahead. It could muddy your image, but if done carefully it just might work out well. However, you are talking about merging 2 different systems with different sonic qualities and it will have to be done carefully. People have been using 2 or even 4 subwoofers in parallel for quite some time so that is nothing new. Mounting speakers both low and high on a wall is also not unheard of. I'd suggest you put the best sounding speakers closest to ear level and the other ones up high. You may also find after you try it that you prefer the imaging with just 7 speakers better than you do with 12.

Now the thing I alluded to earlier is the impedance matching. If you try to hook up speakers in parallel without being conscious of matching impedance, you are asking for fried outputs. You can always run higher speaker impedance safely. It's going lower you have to be careful of. Note that running speakers in parallel divides the impedance. Running them in series is the only way to add impedance. Good luck.

  3. I think you need a 12.1 receiver or a 12.1 player/device to play 12 speakers! You may need 2 receivers and it will be a pain to adjust the volume on both of them (if you have a player with all analog outputs).
