But if you want it to mean something it should be "Lucky" because you rescued him.

maybe "mojave" (pronounced /moʊˈhɑːvi/) like the desert because he looks sandy. or maybe "cherokee" because it sounds cool

Chief Joseph.

You should look it up.

Chief Joseph was the leader of the Nez Percé indians.

They were famous horse breeders in Oregon.

In the west of America.

They ended up getting into a bit of a war with the USA govt and had to flee their homes.

Joseph led his tribe of 800 men women and children on a 1,100 mile tactical retreat from the US calvary ending only 40 miles from Canada and safety.

(tactical retreat means a running battle)

Any of the young men's names like Looking Glass or Olikut

A Quarter horse/stock horse is a western horse and deserves a good western name.

Go for HOPE as a name, and from the Roman "spes" for the Goddess of hope, I'd make his name Spesus, or "lord of hope in literal translation"

He is the embodiment of your concern for another creature on this planet... He is truly hope, and I congratulate you for saving him from a terrible fate...
