can u overdose or hurt yourself from taking too much of the pill ativan (adivan) ?

Yes. That's why there's an antidote for Ativan and the whole benzodiazepines group. The most dangerous effect is the respiratory depression (you will stop breathing). A combination of benzodiazepines and sleeping meds it was killed Heath Ledger. You can accidentally take different kinds of these meds to help with anxiety or insomnia without knowing that they increase the risk of respiratory depression and sedation.

ativan is lorazepam which is a medium acting benzodiazepine. it is excreted by phase two conjugation reactions in the kidney. this means that the drug would not become liver toxic in high doses. chemically, benzodiazepines act by binding to omega 1 and 2 GABA receptors in the CNS leading to inhibition of action potentials and a overall depressant effect on the CNS. compared to the barbiturates which also bind to gaba, benzodiazepines increase the affinity for GABA to bind to its receptor. it also increases the opening of the GABA receptor channels. barbiturates increase the length of time that the GABA channel remains open. However unlike benzo's barbiturates potentiate GABA neurotransmitter effects independant of GABA.

What does all this mean. Chemically it means that when benzo's are taken in high concentrations they cause the body to inhibit GABA release. This creates a ceiling effect and for this reason benzo's do not cause fatalaties when taken orally in large doses and stops at having a anaesthetic effect. Barbiturates pass this causing coma and eventually death.

The most serious adverse effects were mentioned above. in addition ataxia (lock jaw), confusion, slurred speech and lethargy.

all the while being very addictive.  Be very careful if you are into 'em.  Nothing wrong with that, but there is something wrong with dying and addictive behavior problems.

Not only can you overdose, you could die. This drug could cause a multitude of problems.
