  1. It's far too complex to really describe on here. Suffice it to say that when stances are used correctly for what they are intended they can be very helpful in self defense, and in fact having a good stance is essential.

I see once again we have a UFC junkie (Captian Awsome) that has absolutely no idea about all of the techniques in any "traditional" art and what they are about and judges everything by what happens in the octogon, not realizing or caring that there is a huge differance between what goes on in the ring and real life or death self defense.

Even Bas says that there is a big difference, but all the MMA fans tend to ignore that. Pitty that they are so ignorent since the only real exposure they have ever had with Martial Arts is what they see on tv.

  2. Stances don't win fights.  Knowing how to fight does.  That is why people who take Tai Kwon Do get rocked every time they step into an MMA bout.

  3. Stances do win fights, just like math wins wars. With out it you are hopeless, but you have to know how and when to use them. For instance you use your stances about 5 years before and about 3hours at time everyday leading up to a fight! You see you are building, strengthen, and conditioning!

Silly, I could name a bunch of stances that I call them but the chances are you never heard of them or know them by a different name.

Front, back, side, horse, cat, twisted, hook, deep, crane, monkey, fighting, old man, and standing.

Each builds strength and balance and fluidity from movement to movement. While fighting and stretching to get in a strike, you are going to fall into strange foot positions. Try as you might, you will never be able to predict every movement you will use in a fight. Practicing these stances allow you to get used to strange positions to recover quickly.

  4. I guess ignorance is bliss for some.  So I won't comment on the first responce.

Stances are important because the give you the foundation for kicks punches throws redirects etc... The simple stances are easy to describe. I have done it on here before. You really need someone trained expert to check you because it is easy to fool yourself into thinking you have it nailed right.  SO I'll be silly and try to set up the first few basic stances.

    Front stance:

Stand with feet slightly more than shoulder width apart, feet parallel. Take one full step forward. Weight should be on both feet, about equal. Always be on the balls of your feet except at the end of a punch or kick. Knees slightly bent. Make knees slightly bent a way of life.;)

    Middle stance:

Feet slightly more than shoulder width apart. A little wider than front stance. Knees slightly bent. (that is because you now live with knees slightly bent) Hips in a pelvic thrust forward.

    Horse stance:

Stand with the feet slightly farther apart.

Same as middle stance only knees bent half way to a full squat as if riding a horse. Practice this one until you can hold it for at least 4 min. without pain.

    Back stance:

Bring the feet together to form an L. Move the heels about 1 to two inches apart. That is with the left foot pointing ahead. and the right foot pointing to the right. Knees slightly bent ...by now this is the way you walk around because it is cool to be 2 inches shorter.

Move the left foot forward with most of your weight on your back leg. Move the front leg and practice kicking with the front leg by bringing up the knee.  You will know this stance is right because you won’t need to shift your weight to deliver a good kick from this position.

All of these stances are on the balls of your feet.

Some simple rules to help you when fighting: Always move the foot that is in the direction you are going first.

Never slide or drag your feet from one move to the next.

Never lean in the direction you are going or punching or kicking.

Keep your darn thumbs in. Don't put them in your fist but never have then out there to grab. Tuck them over yor forefinger and middle finger when making a fist.

When steping forward or back allways form a C with your foot. This is a sweeping motion. Make it a habit so you doon't need to think. It is OK to walk funny you are a martil artist;)

Find a good school to train at. Be humble. Live long

As you train you will figure out why stances are inportant. Trust me It becomes evident after  a while.
