  1. runes are nordic landmarks written in a character it seems no one can decipher properly

  2. There are many, many types of runes.  I will assume you mean Norse runes the Elder Futhark  which had 24 runes the young futhark has 16.  They were give to man by Odin who hung from a tree overhanging the Mirmir well and after wounding himself and hanging for nine days he reached out and screaming grabbed the runes and fell into darkness.  When he awoke he had not only the runes for writing but also and understanding of there esoteric meanings as well.  The rune originally were carved on the branches taken from a fruit tree and "risted" meaning carved and stained with paint or blood.  The shaman of the clan or the head of the household for family matter would at random pull runes from the pile or throw them into the air and "read" the runes.  If throw in the air just the upright ones are read.  They were also chanted and made into bind runes for magical purposes.

Nowadays we often see runes on stones or glass beads.  I personally found rocks and marked my set with runes.  It is unnecessary to stain them with blood you can use dragon's blood if you need to have that morbid aspect.  I make bind runes for whatever purpose I need them for.  I will not go into the entire futhark and everything I know I teach a five day course on the runes and all I teach would take to long to type.  There are excellent sites on line and many great books my favorite author is Freya Aswynn but the authority would be Edred Thorsson.  Blessed be.

  5. Runes (fm ON "run" = "mystery) are set of symbols used variously as an alphabet and in magickal and divinatory workings.  They are traditionally associated with Odin and were revealed to him through his self sacrifice when he hanged himself from the World Ash, Yggdrasil.  There are a number of good books out on the subject, if you're interested you can e-mail me.
