Can u tell me what laptop.....?

should I buy that doesn't cost me a fortune,Is going to be used mostly for email and Instant Messaging.

depends on if it's for school or work?  or personal use? i'm what you may consider a "power user" and i do a bunch of internet stuff, lots of video and lots of photoshop stuff.  i usually go for a cheap laptop that you can get between $400 to $600 and make sure you get lots of RAM at least 2GB.  it works for me and i personally like that i can sell it next year and get the another one for $400 next year which will be better.  those stuck with a $1,000 laptop usually keep it for years since they need to get a good return on their investments.  but for your light use of IM and email then sure a low range laptop would be fine.
