  1. Sure if he had been captured by masked men from the Ballymany Stud as suggested by Richard Beckham then all the staff would have been arrested!!!!!!!(only joking, should have been "from the Ballymany stud By masked..")

Best suggestion was that it was carried out by the IRA and that he actually carried out some clandestine stud duties before he was killed.

whenever they bring a Irish bred horse to the united states in a big race, i always put something on the nose, regardless of the odds...

  4. This is an article that gives some information on Shergar's abduction:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates...

As was mentioned, there were difficulties in the insurance payout on the stallion.  As is typically the case of syndicated stallions, each shareholder was responsible for separately insuring his or or her interest in the horse.  Some shareholders opted for insurance that covered only mortality, some shareholders opted for more comprehensive insurance, that covered loss from theft as well as mortality.  The shareholders that had coverage for loss from theft were able to get a payout;  those whose insurance was for mortality only were out of luck, because the insurers demanded proof of the horse's death, which amounted to finding his body.  Thus far no remains of the stallion have ever been identified.

It seems fairly certain that Shergar was abducted by connections of the IRA who intended to ransom him, and who had no experience handling a stallion.  The reports from reliable sources are that Shergar became unruly and was injured while in the possession of the IRA abductors, who then decided to cut their losses and killed the horse.

Shergar did sire 32 foals from his only crop, of which Authaal and Maysoon were probably the best.  His daughter Pomme Rose is the dam of two stakes winners, the geldings Honneur Royale and Or Royal; none of his other daughters has to date produced a significant stakes winner.

It seems doubtful, given the lack of quality offspring produced by his daughters (and they were bred to some of the best stallions available), if Shergar's name will continue to be found in pedigrees for any significant influence.

One thing that Shergar's loss did cause:  after his disappearance and the subsequent insurance company refusal to pay off on mortality insurance, many people in the Thoroughbred business started including loss by theft as a cause for payoff of their insurance policies.  In return, the leading insurers of Thoroughbreds started including a clause that voided the policy if the loss was deemed to be a result of war, civil disturbance or unrest, or terrorist activities.

  5. He was taken on 9th February 1983 from Ballymany Farm in Co Kildare.

Although owned by the Aga Khan, he was actually syndicated - which means numerous people owned shares in him.  It was the syndicate, along with the Aga Khan, that decided no ransom would be paid.

Although there is no concrete evidence, a former IRA man claimed to have been part of the gang that took the horse.  In all likelihood he was shot and disposed of within a few days, if not hours, of being taken.  Shergar was known to have a volatile temper and only very experienced horsemen would have been able to handle him for any length of time.

Borderline is right in saying that the insurance (reported to be in the region of £30million) was never paid, as the insurance company wanted to see the body before paying out.

  6. February 8, 1983, he was kidnapped by masked gunmen from the Ballymany Stud, near The Curragh in County Kildare, Ireland.

  7. Yep he was kidnapped in Ireland in 1983 from stud..Pretty sure the IRA have since admitted  kidnapping the horse.. ,The horse died as they did not know how to handle horses.   Heard horse reared up when moving horse lorries....                   .Pretty sure the insurance company have never paid out as nobodys "proved" they found the body, plenty tried,to find Shergars body..
