Can u tell the difference between realgold & heavily plated gold?

  1. Yes You can. Train your eye to see the difference.

    Real gold is slightly lighter and brighter in color.  Plated gold also looks painted on in that the corners and grooves are not as defined.

    Hold them both in front of you side by side. Keep looking back and forth.

    This is really the only way to developed an eye.


  2. No, you need to do more than simply look at it.

    Plated gold objects are made by using brass or bronze as the base on which the gold is plated. The density (weight per unit of volume) is lower than if the object were made of solid gold.

    You can check the density of the object by weighing it in air and then in water. If it is gold then the ratio of (air weight) divided by (air weight minus water weight) will exceed 9.

    Alternatively using an eurika jar (for which see Archimedes famous proposition) find the volume of the same masses (weights) of gold and of the object. The volume of the gold will be less than that of the object if and when it is of plated.gold.
