but wut does it mean. pls give me an example that relates to this statement.

Exactly. During the Civil War, heroes were frequently identified with those who died to hold up the flag, etc. These were identified as heroes in a time where honor was one of the most important values in life.

I like masince's answer. Basically the qualities that you find important, your values, or our values, are reflected greatly in some, and they are held up as "heroes"

For instance if someone was anti-war, their hero may be someone who is working on protests, etc.

Someone else may be extremely religious, and have as their hero a member of the clergy, what have you.

who do you call a hero?  The answer to that shows what you value.   If your hero is your parent it shows you value what your parent represents, if your hero is someone who "saves people" i.e. fireman then it shows you value saving lives.  

If your hero is someone who fights for the underdog, then it shows you value the little things in life regardless of the strong "status quo".

In recent USA history, there was the 9/11 attacks - the "hero's" to the USA were the firemen, the police, the ones who fought back.  To the attackers, the heros were the ones who flew the planes into the towers.....  Each side had a hero and the hero shows what the value was for the admirer..... One side valued destroying USA morale, the other side valued USA lives.
