If you're really wanting to not buy something specifically for bikes and instead just use something around the house, go siphon a smidge of oil out of your car using the dipstick and rub that on the bike chain. Or if you change your own car oil, keep one of the empty oil quart bottles around.  The dribbles left on the bottom of the bottle will be plenty to lubricate your bike chain a few times.

    I've done this myself for quite some time, main drawback of the car oil is it tends to attract dust and become gunky, but if you clean the chain regularly it's not too bad.  And motor oil has got to be way better than using a product intended for cooking.
