  1. A debit card checks your account instantly when you make a purchase, but it may vary on store.  Some stores will only apply a 1$ surcharge, which gets changed to the full amount a couple days later, while other stores (most) will charge the full amount and thus a request to "hold" funds to make sure it exists.

Some stores will allow you to "overcharge" your card which basically means it doesn't really check your account, most likely it's just a 1$ check to make sure the card is valid.  In this case you are likely going to get slammed with fee's, usually overdraft fee's.

Unlike a check, it goes through instantly (as pending).  Depending on how your financial institution uses this information, they might not charge you over draft fee's till it has "completed".

Just remember, it will likely decline your card as soon as you try if there is no money in there.

  2. Of course not!  A debit card  is a debit card and a credit card is a credit card.  If you try to use a debit card when there is no money in the account, the purchase will be denied at the checkout.

  3. no.  They will place a hold immediately!  If you cannot afford the "hold", do not pay at the pump.  Go into the store and "prepay".   That way you only pay for what you get.  Not a huge hold that can take up to 30 days to clear
