No you can't connect the tamagotchi v5 with other versions. You can only connect with other v5 members. Trust me, I tried to connect with my friend yesterday and it didn't work because she had the v4.5.

Well i have a V5 and when u go to connect, the V5 doesn;t say other! my friend has a V3 and we tried conecting today and it kept saying it failed, it prob connects with v4's but deffenitly not with v3's
