im not looking to buy one. im doing something with wildlife trade and international poaching laws, so if you could also answer the following that would be great.

do strict international standards for shipping live animals prevent injury and death during transport?

are macaws sold in pet stores generally bred in captivity?

how many ocelot pelts are needed to make a fur coat?

what is the principle threat to the asian elephant?

who are the first and second largest consumers of wildlife in the world?

is serving dolphin fish legal?

thank you! this topic actually interests me, so if you have any other information about illegal wildlife trade and poaching, let me know!

  1. There are international agreements. But control of imports and exports varies from one country to another.  You reall have to look at a particular nation and look at both the letter of the law and how strictly its enforced.

I don't know about the macaws and ocelots.  The biggest threat to elephants--asian or african--is ivory poachers, followed by habitat loss. In the US, there are regulations against hunting dolphin, but I'm not sure if its actually illlegal to serve it.

One of the best sources is the many wildlife programs on PBS (check out Nature and Savage Planet--also, you'll find a lot of stuff and links on their website pbs.org)

Also, check out the regulations of the State of Hawaii--they are among the strictest in the world.

But really, why should anyone object to importing venemous reptiles?  We have one living in the White House! :)
