  1. At the moment until December of this year you can still pay on board the train with no penalty, however once the train system has been fully intergrated with the Southern Franchise the pay on board aspect should stop due to the ATOC rules (Gatwick Express was not a signitory to this set of rules).

As for the ques at Gatwick Station they normally run quite fast and during most of the day there are 3 or 4 windows manned at least, less in the quieter periods first thing in the morning, late at night and night shift.

However Why are you paying the Gatwick Express Premium? When the Southern Ticket to Victoria is £4 cheaper per adult and only takes a few minutes longer on the fast trains and 15 mins on the slow service??

    Anyway hope this helps.

  2. They usually don't allow discounts on the actual train. Why not buy your tickets over the internet on www.thetrainline.com You can get good deals in advance.

  3. Get them before you get on the train, it will be cheaper that way.

  4. If you get on at a station which is staffed then they dont usually allow you to use discount cards of any type. I think the queue would depend on the day and time you are travelling. You can book in advance over the internet which would make it cheaper, and you can use credit cards to pay onboard the train.

  5. No, if you choose to not to buy a ticket from a staffed station you will be required to purchase full priced tickets without railcard discount, this is defined in the national rail bylaws and acknowledged by ATOC (association of train operating companies)

You can pay with a credit card on most national rail services including the gatwick express.

Why take the risk? buy them online at www.thetrainline.com you can get discount and pay with a credit card, and either pick them up at a station from a fast ticket machine or have them posted to you.

  6. i would phone up the company to check before hand so you are not left high and dry, and the que depends on the time of day often 8:30 - 10 trains are quite busy so there may be a large que.

  7. You have to buy them at the station to be able to have the railcard discount unless it is an unstaffed station.

However, you can buy tickets a month in advance or even longer so you don't have to wait in queue's in the stations.
