  1. It starts with one individual...It must be done without the initiation of force or coercion, i.e., without the government, without a group/community.  You must lead by example yourself.

We have a mixed economic system in the U.S.  Lots of government interference (direct and indirect).  Lots of pressure groups shouting to get those government handouts.  What you can do is grow some of your own food, and buy food at farmers markets.  Ask around about how you can save energy where you live.  The most important thing is to lead by example and do it yourself instead of preaching it.

  2. Well ya, it will go from one person, to a community, to a city, to a county then through the government.

  3. I think we could - but it would require a consciousness shift which actually may be happening now.

It doesn't seem that difficult as corporations et al begin discovering that conservation affects the bottom line significantly.

As far as planning our communities and infrastructure oh heck yeah!  I know it's not a perfect model but Portland, OR has done just that - other places in Europe - smart planning decisions and minimizing sprawl have made this city one of the most liveable - and best for biking in North America.

The Real Estate market is also far more stable - sure housing prices have gone up over the years but they have everywhere.  People complain about property taxes, but dang  -I can safely and comfortably bike to work to more than pay the extra $500 a year or so.

Also with gas prices rising I have to wonder if "local" produce and goods will be more competitive.

Yes Amy L - I think we can take a huge step forward by doing the things you describe and we won't just be improving the "environment" to satisfy some beret wearing "radicals" - we'll be improving the overall quality of life - even for folks like JELLO - whether he wants us too or not.
