Question:

Can we cut a hole in one room for cool air to flow to the next room?

We have 2 bedrooms, 10x11 each, side by side. There is a window air condtioner--6000 btu, in one room. I wondered if we could cut a hole, and put a vent cover on each side in the wall seperating the 2 rooms, so air could flow from one room to the next?

The doors stay closed most of the time because there are teens in them. We tried leaving them open but the air did not make it to the next room enough to cool it. The wall is drywall.

Thanks for your help

  1. that should work  they do it with heat

  2. Teens+vents="mommy!!! he's masturbating again!!! make him stop."

A little on the drastic side but you get the idea.  There will be no privacy at all and teens seem to value that privacy.  It will be cheaper and easier to buy a second a/c for the other room.  One a/c will not have to cool both rooms and you can turn each one off when not in use.

  3. The direct answer is one you've already mentioned in the details.

The issue more directly relates to the BTU,,, approximating 1/2 ton of AC, which would equate to decently cooling approx. 250 to 300 Sq. ft.

Given that each room is 110 sq. ft. but the second will only be cooled by venting, obviously the room holding the unit will always be cooler, but certainly the issue  that way is more effective than opening a door, and possibly having that size AC over worked in cooling a larger area.

    Just my two "sense"

  4. it would be more effective to just buy another window unit... the only way for your idea to work would be to also run a additonial fan.

  5. I have one large window a/c and whoever built the house installed a powered vent/fan towards the bottom of the floor (approx 10 inches diameter)..it has a pull chain on it. when the door is closed i turn it on and it pulls air in from main room to the other.. seems to work well enough. I don't know where you can buy this type of vent though! Btw...I have a 18,000 btu a/c.

  6. Simply cutting a vent between the two rooms will not appreciably cool the second room.

If you have a basement and a forced air furnace, turn off the burner, turn on the "summer switch" that causes the fan to run, close most of the vents except those in the room(s) you need to cool.

Also be sure that your attic is properly vented. We put in continuously vented soffits and two wind turbines on the roof and now never use the A/C except on really humid days.

  7. do you own your own home?? I take it that you do!! Do you have a forced air furnace?? if so just get central A/C... you actual will save money in the long run... by not running all the fans and window units!!!! Thats what I did, and My electric bill actually went down over $30 a month!!! and we got a central A/C for about $1500 so to me it was well worth it.... and all the rooms are now cool!!!

  8. http://www.nextag.com/fan-through-wall/s...

copy and paste the above link, a through the wall fan in easy to install and would work good

  9. some cool air will make it through but not enough...not sure how big 6000 btu unit is, but 2 smaller units would be better

  10. Do own the home ? If so you can do whatever you want . If you rent I would not suggest it. Besides if the doors stay closed , you still won`t have any airflow thru the room anyway. Just try and find a small air conditioner for their room or install a ceiling fan.

  11. sure u can ,   just cut a hole and install  a vent ,  it wont force the air, but it will help ,   just make sure you have a vent that wont close... around 14 inch x 10 will work

what did we do before  a/c   ????
