Its root system is rhizome, so its a big root, that grows side ways, in the top 5 in.'s of soil.

I had a hard time ( actually 4 attempts ) of established bamboo and I had little success. I tried all different times of year and as soon as the little shoot was cut off from the big root - it lost all its zest for life. My experience taught me it was TIMING as to what time if year it was, as to the sucess ratio.

Good luck and tell us how it comes out.

Propoagate new plants from cuttings - I doubt the hard cambium layer would support that method.

Easier method is to dig a whole clump up, and split it, re-planting the pieces.
