Can we eat these bananas that we found on a tree?

We were in Costa Rica and we found a tree that had bananas in it. We took a few. When or if they ripen, would they be ok to eat, or would we get sick?

They might not be bananas - plantains look like bananas but are quite a bit longer - same color mostly.

But sure go for it!

That's where bananas grow - on trees.  If they're ripe, they're probably much sweeter than ones that have been shipped to the grocery stores

They are likely more healthy than what you buy in a USA store.  Remember there are MANY kinds of bananas - these may be red skinned when they ripen or they may be cooking bananas which need to be cooked to be palatable.
