Can we go back in time and prevent someone's death caused by an accident from happening?

Let's suppose that this person who passed away is cremated. If you go back in the past and prevent this accident from happening, will all the events that happened after he/ she passed dissapear. For exemple will his/her funeral not take place.? And will his/ her funeral etc. previous and afterwards events releated to this death be remembered?

  1. Yes its possible.

  2. Time travel is impossible... but your example helps demonstrate why that might actually be a good thing.  Say you go back in time to prevent someone's death.  In theory, as soon as you do that, the normal timeline that already happened is erased, and a new one starts at that point, where the person didn't die.  Events unfold in a completely different way.

Here's where the problem comes in: since the person didn't die, now you have no reason to travel back in time to stop it.  So you won't.  Which means the person will die, since you didn't travel back in time.  So then you'll travel back in time to stop it... it keeps going in circles.  It's a paradox, and nobody knows what will happen in the event of a paradox.  Some think the entire universe might end.

  3. You cannot change the past.  If you could, you could strangle your grandfather in his cradle.

  4. time travel will be very common in 5 to 7 years from now due to high technology and science development.

  5. Hippo has it right for a thought experiment, but missed the other theory which assumes there is only one timeline.

In this case even though you prevent the death of the person, they die anyway as time, fate and cosmology etc force the timeline back onto the path that is destined... on a single track there is only one set pattern of events. This is also seen in so called wheels or circles of time where the same events happen again and again over a long period of time... as in Wheel of Time books by Robert Jordan.

It's an interesting diversion... as for time travel, well time is a dimension that we see only flowing in one direction, which does not preclude it from flowing in both [directions]. Experiments have been completed where two extremely accurate [atomic] clocks have been synchronised, one is flown around the world on a jet. the time is then compared and the one that was flown is now faster...! which also gives rise to the theory that as you approach the speed of light, in your local reference time flows at the same rate, but outside that reference time has gone bu much. much more quickly... a teaser, but enjoy.

  6. One theory I heard is that ALL possible events split off in to multiple versions of the universe.

So all that would happen if you travelled back in time to prevent the accident would be that you would be in another universe where they didn't die, so of course their funeral would not happen.

Maybe this is baloney, but it's just what I read, so don't blame the messenger lol

    See:

I'm only an amateur so who knows if I'm right lol.

Time travel isn't necessarily impossible.  Scientists reckon that they might be able to create wormholes that will go to another space and time in the universe, possibly back in time, so if these wormholes could be kept open then technically someone could move through this "shorter" distance to go back in time.

But before we open the wormholes no time traveller could have travelled before that time, but only once we start opening up wormholes.

  7. It is impossible.

    We can not change history.

Also prevent your birth by contraceptive methods!

  8. Well, if you went back in time to stop something from happening everything that you stopped from happening wouldn't happen,so if you, lets say, killed Hitler, then you would stop WWII but the world may be overpopulated, and who knows. You may have not been born because your parents were brought together by the second world war in some way or another. If you go back in time every little thing you do affects the future, like if you go back in time to Africa 3 million years ago and ate some berries, your ancestors may have needed those berries to eat so they wouldn't starve, and you would have caused the entire Human race to become extinct. : )

And now back to your question.Obviously no one would remember because if you stopped your friend from dieing, and the reason you remember is because the most common theory about time travel is that if someone were to travel back in time they would create an alternate universe where the thing they stopped form happening was stopped, which would be the one where you traveled to....My head hurts now. And what I said was probably hard to follow, just read Wikipedia. -.-
