Can we live on post if we are not actually stationed there?

My husband will be reclassing into a different MOS and will be going to a new AIT. The AIT will be 10 months long but I have been told that I cannot move there with him and be able to live on post, since it's under 12 months. We currently live 300 miles from that post. This is not BCT AIT, so does that make a difference? He just spent 15 months being deployed, I don't want to be apart for another 10!! Any info would be helpfull.

  1. if he does not have accompanied orders, no you may not live in MFH there.  He will have to find out if he will be permitted to live off  base.. but all expenses incurred will be out of pocket.

  2. That is totally up to the housing office of the post that the AIT is at.  I have seen some instances where they have made an exception to policy.  It really matters if there is available housing.  If not, he is still getting his BAH, rent an apartment outside the base.  I have had a lot of soldiers do that in the past.  It really is an inconvienence, but that is how the Army operates.

  3. NO you cannot get housing where he is going to school..if he will have follow on orders to a command on that base, then yes..but it all depends on his orders. The military will not pay for you to be transferred anywhere for less than 12 mo, nor is housing going to give you a house to occupy for that period or less.Like the other person said, you can dump your current base housing, and move yourself to the same city, but thats all going to be on you, and moving an entire household is costly, plus youll have to wait a while for BAH to kick in and when you get back, youll have no guarentee of housing. I know its tough, but just plan to make regular trips to visit him..of course keep in mind, he'll be in school all day and not likely to have every weekend free due to duty...oh and not all schools have late liberty...

  4. You might. Where I'm stationed at it's privatized housing and you don't even need to be in the military to live on Post.

  5. well he is reclassing so he will still be in ait and be in the barracks there. they might let you move there out of your own pocket but you will have to live off post. otherwise call the housing office there and ask them. but i doubt the army will pay for you to be moved there just because of 10 months. Good luck

  6. I DONT THINK SO BECAUSE THE FIRST THING THEY WILL ASK YOU IS......YOUR ORDERS.HOWEVER NOTHING STOPS YOU FROM LIVING OFF POST ON YOUR OWN, THEY DONT CARE ABOUT THAT, THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE THAT DO IT.
