Not totally free-there are a few systems to use that will not charge you, but would then charge the recipient of the message.

Yes on the question about sending messages thru e-mail and not sure about free on all mobile sevices.  Usually in the US, when I receive a text as far as my carrier (and probably true to other US mobile services) is concern it is free but other carriers from other countries may or may not have the same rules. So you may want to check with your mobile carrier.
