  1. For MiniDV camcorders, you'll need a faster connection called FireWire.

If your computer doesn't have a FireWire port you can get one installed.

  2. Go to :

  3. just a side note the the above answerers excellent point.

usb 2.0 can technically do dv stream as it does actually go faster than standard firewire BUT it has nowhere near the same bandwidth consistency.

fw (400) does the job well. buy and card and install a driver for much better results. (or better yet, buy a mac!)

  4. The above answers are correct you need a firewire cable or iLink (as Sony calls it) and a firewire port on your PC. For the official answer see the Sony support site for your camera. Follow the link below...................

  5. Most if not all Standard MiniDV camcorders do not generally support full DV quality video transfer via USB.  You will need to use Firewire (i.Link) to properly capture DV quality footage directly to your computer.

Some camcorders will support lower quality video streams to your computer via USB, for things such as webcam functionality, etc.  Devices with tapless memory like hard drive may support full quality video transfer via USB.. although generally such formats will be mpeg2 or proprietary and not DV.  Furthermore, if your computer has an analog capture card, you can also always capture using a camcorder AV out.

As far as you Handycam goes.. if it is a MiniDV tape model.. I'd quess it won't work. Though I haven't used that model specifically... though I did skim over the manual online and it looks as though I might be right. The USB cable is generally supplied for things like still image transfer and other such functions.

  6. If you have a mini dv (cassette) camcorder….

Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your PC probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, since most computers (except possibly brand new) don't come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder.
