Can we use English as a synonym for the word British?

Question

British means any thing related to Britain for example a British organization or British product. I want to know if we can use English for this purpose. For example, English organization or English company..etc.

I do it and I've yet to be corrected for it. However, they usually refer to themselves as British.

I don't see why not. The country is referred to as England as well as Britain (or Great Britain or the United Kingdom as well). I've heard though that it is bad bad form to confuse them with the Irish.
