  1. A compressor is used to compress. A gas is compressible but water is almost incompressible.

A centrifugal pump does not compress and so is useless for compressing air.

  2. You have to consider the terms you have used.

There are a number of types of compressor. They would all pump water if used that way but would not be the best way.

One of the types of compressor is a centrifugal type so yes it will compress air. You would not call it a pump though because it is made to much different specifications than a centrifugal water pump.

  3. Sure, you can use a spoon to cut a steak too if you are determined enough, but why bother?

Most off-the-shelf centrifugal pumps would over-rev and burn out while providing only a sputtering of air.

I feel sorry for the compressor already, it'd make noises like a drowning cat.

  4. compressor primary use is to compress the gas to increase its pressure, and you know that you cant use water in the compressor because it will surely destroy your equipment, for example in refrigeration,.There are device that control the liquid refrigerant not to pass the compressor.Increase of pumps it is design to add up energy to the water not in air or gasses, also if you do that your pump will corrode.
