There are actually many words that are proper nouns but have other meanings and so are acceptable in Scrabble.  Japan,  is the name of a country when capitalized, but is also is a kind of wood finishing and therefore can be used.  Interestingly enough, it is a verb in the  uncapitalized version.

but you cant use abbreviations or proper nouns
