Can what I eat contribute to developing diabetes? Or should I be okay if I'm otherwise healthy & active?

I am concerned that the amount of sugar I consume (about 4 or 5 cans of regular soda a week plus some candy/sugary treats here and there) might put me at risk for diabetes. Does it?

  1. I didn't mean to give a thumb up to Nancy N and I have no idea how to undo it (drives me crazy when the laptop clicks stuff as I mouse by it LOL)

Depending on when you consume these products (after exercise or just because it's afternoon?) switch to diet soda or water and wean off the extra sweets if you're concerned.

Better to cut the extra calories and maintain a healthy weight than to gain, which might add to any risk of eventually developing diabetes type 2.

  2. sugar consumption does not cause diabetes but a poor diet can lead to weight issues which do bring about type2 diabetes

  3. As long as your weight is fine, the answer is no.  Juvenile diabetes is generally thought to be inherited, and adult onset is usually brought about by excess weight.  Refined sugars do not cause either type.
