Question:

Can you Add/Install DirectTv recievers on own?

We were supposed to have a 4 room install, but the guy installing it couldn't run a new 4th wire to the room we wanted. He didn't tell us until he was done, so we didn't have time to fight with him. (It was an 11 hour install... don't ask!) My husband chose not to call them on it and we sent back the reciever. Of course, now we want the 4th reciever in that room.

If we were to go and buy a reciever at best buy and run another cable in off the switcher in the 4th plug in, will it work?

I looked at the dish and there doesn't appear to be anywhere that anything else needs to be plugged in. All of the plugs on the switcher are full from the dish itself. The only open holes on the switcher are on the side for the tv coaxils. I know we have to activate the reciever and all. But it seems that is all we would have to do... run another cable. We can handle that on our own.

Does anyone know if I'm right and can do this? Buy a box and run a cable?

  1. Ya - run the other cable and put in the reciever yourself and then call them and activate it.  They run all the lines from the dish down to the connector first - so there are 4 coming down but only 3 going out into your house.  I did the same thing and ran a 2nd coax in to the living room (actually I ran 2 new lines in through the basement, up through the floor and bypassed the jack from the wall) so the hd dvr had 2 lines coming in - which they were supposed to do - I didn't need to do anything else though. (A dvr needs 2 lines coming in to record one channel and watch a different one at the same time.)
