i just bought some security cameras, and they can either be powered by a 9v battery, or by plugging them in. now the plug is very far away, i was wondering if telephone wire can work to extendt the lenght of the wire, if not, what type of wire do i need to get.

Also, ive heard that with small cameras like that that can run with a 9v battery, u can plug it into a telephone line in the wall. is it possible?

Thanks in advance

  1. yes this is possible to use your phone line for energy. just a small amount tho, such as battery charging. Its DC not AC, about 48volt.

you have to be precise tho how you go about it. the telephone company will think you are on a phone call. They may cut you off, thinking there is a problem with the line.(and if they send out a repair man, good look)

i suggest some electronics, electrics knowledge and homework on how your phone line works!!

  2. I wouldn't advise any of this on any level.  You can't use phone wire to extend AC wiring without a very large risk of fire and shock hazard.  You can't plug things into the phone network for power because the phone network looks at the load and current draw of the line to determine if the phone is off hook for a phone call.  Connecting other devices to the phone line for power could cause the phone equipment to think your phone is off the hook for a call and your phone line to be tied up, preventing any incoming or outgoing calls.  When your phone rings, the phone company sends 70 to 90 volts AC down the line for ringing current.  This could damage the camera.  If your phone company found out about it they could be understandably irritated.  Many security cameras can be powered through the coax cable.  This might be an option unless your's is wireless.  If the battery lasts any decent length of time, just use that.  You could add batteries if you need more operating time between changes.
