Can you add a darker varnish over a lighter one?

I varnished a dresser with a mahogany varnish and it is lighter in area's. I did all the prep work.

I do not like how it looks. It is horrible.

Can I put a darker varnish over the mahogany or do I have to strip it again.

If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate any help you could give.

Thank you.

  1. Yes, a darker one will go over a light one and should give a good result. Lucky you didn't do it the other way round or it would be sandpaper time!

  2. Yes you can.  If the varnish is horrible because of bubbles take a fine grit steel wool and blend the edges into the old varnish. It would be good idea to go ahead and fine sand the whole furniture, it will give a good adhesion. Use foam brush not paint or stain brush, foam leaves less streaks.
