  1. Theoretically, it should be possible and it sounds technically feasible.

However, I just queried an ISP on the question.  On one hand they indicated yes, on the other hand, they basically said the two would probably cause interference with each other, if used "simultaneously" and thus recommended separate phone lines for such a venture.

Yes, you can have both dial up and adsl, the dial up will probably be useless and no need to connect it unless the adsl connection stops working and you can use the dial up as a back up.

    Thanks for your reply.

    One point of clarification:

How about if there are two computers, where only one only has dial-up modem installed and the other computer has an Ethernet card?

Can both PC's surf simultaneously where one is connected to DSL and the other is connected to dial-up?  (bearing in mind I am assuming DSL and Dial-up are being delivered over 1 telephone line wire pair?)

    Thanks again.

Both computers will be able to connect simultaneously, however you will need to use different phone lines as well as different numbers. If you have both connections connected on the same line, the Adsl connection will become intermittent while the Dial up is connected.

Here is another opinion from another ISP:

(According to this ISP, it is possible)

    Yes! two ways...

    1) you could be plugged into your DSL and as long as you had a dialup modem (plugged in) you could access the internet using the dialup and actually still be plugged into your DSL. This would only be useful if your DSL kept going down and then you wouldn't want to be connected to dialup the entire time (waste of money) ...

    2) On each phone (phone line) in your house you should have a DSL filter or splitter. As you know you can talk on the phone and use your DSL at the same time. So if you had a 2nd computer or laptop plugged into that phone line, it could use that line for dialup access while the other computer was using DSL.

BEST METHOD - You would be better off buying a wifi router like Linksys and plugging the main computer into it directly and then using a wifi card in the 2nd computer and accessing the internet ANYWHERE in the house or outdoors you wanted too ...

If you really want to know, I suggest you should put the question to your telephone/DSL service provider and get their opinion as to "how feasible" is such a setup, even if they were inclined to accomodate you.

  2. Yes, DSL doesn't affect the "audio" part of the phone, which is the area where a modem works.

DSL operates on higher frequencies, which is why they can co-exist on the same line.

Now having said that, some dsl filters will introduce line errors to the modem, causing the modem to operate slower, but should still work.

I'm curious why you would want to keep dialup after you get DSL.
