Can you add new finishes to a guitar?

If i wanted an oil finish to be changed into a plastic coating finish could i trade it in for them to do that?

You can, but it would change the tone on acoustic guitars.

The body and neck would need to be stripped down, then the oil finish applied.  I used to work for Ovation and it was common once oil finish came out.  The only problem is that the original paint sealed the pours of the wood so many coats of oil needed to be applied, but it stayed ok.
