  1. Id say the agency you were going through would do tests and stuff to see if you are stable enough to look after a child. if you are on meds and have your condition under control yeah i dont see why not.

  2. Bi-polar disorder is a treatable illness and as long as an adoptive parent is receiving proper treatment, it would be wrong for agencies to preclude them.

  3. As long as the bipolar disorder is well controlled and the PAP has a good history of taking the proper steps to keep it controlled (medications, MD follow up), it should be fine.

As a caveat, some international programs do have regulations concerning depression, bipolar disorder, etc.  That's within the purvue of the country in question, to determine what criteria they want for adoptive parents.

I don't think it would be an issue in domestic adoptions, however.

  4. You would not be able to adopt from China.  Any type of mental challenges are not considered acceptable in prospective parents.

It may be different if you are choosing to adopt from another country.

  5. Legally being Bi-polar doesn't exclude you from anything. If you taking meds, that can exclude you from the armed forces. If you're not off the wall, as if it's mild or you are appropriately taking your meds, then no worries. You'll find the kid for you.

  6. Many adoption agencies and social workers will exclude you from adopting if you have a mental illness diagnosis.

  7. Would depend on the severity of your condition, the medication(s) you are on, and if the councler and psychiatrist would be willing to give the ok on it.  It is hard to adopt if you have certain disorders as it can be hard to care for a child with them but in some cases yes people with disorders such as bipolar have adopted.
