Can you all help me with format for jail inmates?

Hi everyone! I got a friend that I haven't seen in about a year. We had a great time last time we were together but now he is in jail. :( I know, but I really wanted to talk with him again. I know jail isn't a good place and I wanted to let him no that I am a good friend and that I still remember him and care about him. So I decide I want to write him a letter. However, I have no idea how. The internet says each jail has a different format so I need you all help.

He goes to Walker State Prison ( I tried calling them about 100 times but their line is always busy)

A.) What is the format for writing letters to an inmate in Walker State Prison? Or a simple format all jails use?

B.)Tell me all the rules of sending a letter to an inmate. What I can and cannot do?

C.) How do I know if he gets the letter?

I want a simple straightforward format that will get the letter to him. I don't want to end up writing a letter to someone in Anarctica :) or another inmate. Thank you all so much for your time and answers.

  1. I'd suggest you use the link below, which may be how you got the phone number.  Look up your friend and get his inmate number.  Then on the envelope put:

His Name followed by his Number

    Walker State Prison

    PO Box 68

    Rock Spring, GA 30739

At least, this is how mail is addressed to inmates in Ohio.  Also in Ohio, it cannot be an oversized envelope.  But regular letters and even business size envelopes (up to 6 sheets of computer paper folded in thirds fits into this envelope) are ok.  Don't try to send him any photos or anything else besides your written words until you know their rules.  In fact, you can ask him in your letter.  All inmate mail is opened by prison staff and then ultimately delivered to the inmate.

  2. This by no means is the best answer.

Find the exact address of the jail.  Get mail with RETURN service it will coast extra but it will let you know that someone signed for it.

Don't call the jail, call the post office near the jail.  They may know something about it.  I know dealing with the state can be a pain in the ***

  3. i would suggest you keep calling the prison till you get through. they can tell you better than anyone what must be done. they probably have a ton of other people just like you trying to find out the same information. if you cannot get them on the phone, try writing the letter and on the envelope put his name, john doe c/o walker state prison whatever state and zip.      good luck.
