Question:

Can you all of a sudden develop a dog allergy?

Over the past week I've noticed that after being near either one of my dogs, I end up red eyed, sneezing, watery eyes and a scratchy throat. I've been around dogs near enough my whole life and never had a problem, so is it possible to suddenly develop an allergy such as this, or is it just coincidence?

  1. Anyone can develop or grow out of allergy symptoms at any time. i have been allergic to my cat for FOREVER, but now nothing happens when i cuddle and give him kisses. My friend was never allergic to anything and just this summer she became allergic to pollen and slightly allergic to dogs. Your allergies may stay and be constant allergies, or they may only occur certain times of the year. They may even disappear altogether after awhile. If they don't go away, I recommend talking to your doctor or an allergist about what allergy relievers would suit you best

good luck, i hope this was helpful! :)

  2. If the Dog is new then you may just be allergic to the type of hair it has. Be aware that people aren't just allergic to all Dogs, just certain types of hair and fur.

Also you're Dag might be shedding so now that more hair/fur is around your eyes and mouth, you are developing allergy symptoms but not actually allergic.

Also if the Dog is around your bed or in your room a lot, you may be sleeping with all that stuff he/she sheds in your face all night.

  3. It is possible to develop an allergy by spending time near an allergen.  But your allergy might not be to the dogs themselves, you could be allergic to something they have gotten on their skin or to something they just happen to be near, or you could just have caught a bug that only shows symptoms every now and them.  Go see an allergy specialist and get some tests done.

  4. My sister developed asthma at 33 and never had it before....I am no physician, but probably so.  Check Web MD.

  5. Anything is possible but hopefull if you have its controllable with meds.  A friend of mine became allergic to gluten overnight  at 35 years old.

  6. You do develop allergies from repeated exposure to the allergen, but to have it happen so fast is unlikely.  My guess is that ragweed (or the like) bloomed in your area a few days ago, and your dogs are carrying spores from that into the house on their fur.  Try taking Zyrtec (Target has a generic available), bathing the dogs, and vacuuming really good until frost (if you live in such a climate).  I have seasonal allergies, and the last few days have been terrible for me, too.
