  1. No genious needed, this is a common trick question that I have used here in the UK with pounds as the currency but exactly the same trick, can be used vocally but if someone has a piece of paper, dont try it.

  2. It's a trick question because after the 5 discount each person would be paying an equal sum of 23.333 plus the 1 given back (24.333 x 3) calculates to 73 total, then plus the waiter tip of 2 gives you the 75.

  3. friend,

you are ignoring the bill actually paid and diverting the mind .

    the original bill was=75 riyals

the discount given =  5 riyals

so the bill amount (net)=  75-5=70 riyals

the tip paid to waiter = 2 riyals

    so total amount= 70+2=72 riyals.

each of three paid 25-1=24 riyals

    total paid = 24*3= 72 riyals.

    TALLIED.

    O.K.?

  4. First of all, 75 of anything is too much to pay for 3 serves of nibbles and tea.

However, if the cashier discounted the total bill by 5 to 70, each person owed 23.33 but by giving them back a whole riyal each he took a rounding benefit of 0.66 each. So, from their point of view, they have paid 72, which in fact they have, although his point of view is that they paid the discounted price of 70. Waiter gets 2, they get 3.

    2 + 3 = 5...........5 + 70 = 75.

This explains the missing 1. It is taken by the cashier as rounding benefit.
