Question:

Can you apply caulking over caulking?

I applied a really wide bead of silicone caulk where the edge of my shower meets new drywall we installed (already primed and painted it). I taped off the edges so as to have a really clean line. At first it looked great. I noticed now, though, that as I flattened out the bead, to have a clean/uniform look, there are some spots where the paint is showing through. Can I simply add more caulk there, once the first layer has cured?

  1. layers of caulk can split and separate and allow water to get into the cracks you are trying to seal!

  2. how wide was the initial bead.  If the initial bead was too wide you may want to put a spacer to eat up some of that extra space. This wil in the long run make the bead more stable.  As long as the caulking your putting it on is really clean then you shouldnt have a bonding problem. However, caulking is extremely smooth and this might be a problem.  I have been doing rennovations to my house for about 6 months off and on and have dealt with many caulking issues.

I would personally remove the caulking and do it again with some wedges to take up that extra space.

  3. If it is the same stuff(not a different brand or type) it will stick just fine.

  4. If the first layer is fairly new and clean, you should have no problem.  Good luck and God Bless.

  5. Let the 1st layer cure. Then Take Another look at it.

  6. Hmmm, not really sure here. How "wide" of a bead are we talking about here? Silicone caulk is only really viable up to 1/4" it will tend to separate from the edges beyond that. For wide spaces use "Big Stretch" it's more flexible, and is better suited for wide beads.

  7. Yeah go ahead and do it!!!
