I ask this employment related question here because I know there are some really smart video people that brows here.

I was completely qualified for the position, according to the job description. I want to know if I did something wrong when I applied (no interview, telecommute position), or what was it about my portfolio or experience that didn't work for them.

I work in video production, and have over 7 years experience in broadcasting, including an Emmy for news. I'd really like to know what makes my experience and portfolio so unattractive, because I haven't been able to get out of news!

Can I ask this employer (and future 'rejectors') kindly, politely, WHY I wasn't right for the position?

Here's my portfolio:

  1. Call and ask for feedback for future reference in case you did something at the interview or what criteria they picked someone else over you.

  2. Well there's no harm at all in asking is there - the very worst that can happen is that they decline to tell you - or just ignore your request - but they *may* answer - they have no compulsion to do so - and then you would know.

  3. Go instead to an outfit that is not currently hiring. They are in a position to be candid with their opinions concerning your portfolio.  This is a win situation for everyone concerned. This place might actually like your work and hire you even though no job is posted. Mostly they would not be afraid to tip you off as to what red flags they see since they can't be sued for not offering a job.  Video production is a collegative occupation and introducing yourself to other professionals is a great way to get networked.
