Can you ask the same question more then once?

If you're unsure where you should post a question, is it ok to ask it twice and post under two different catogories?

I did that once and got a violation notice and my question was deleted. The reason they gave for giving me the violation was 'chatting'.  Go figure..  Frankly i see no harm in asking more then once, especially if you've gotten very few or no responses to your question.
