I'm on an Aetna insurance plan as a dependent of my mothers, I go to college and I'm 20 years old. Can I be married and still be under my mothers insurance plan as a dependent, I will still be living with her.

  1. Most of the time the term "dependent" means you are still dependent on your parents for support.  If you are no longer in school, reach a certain age or get married, you are generally no longer considered a dependent.  It would be best if your Mom checks with the benefits person where she works to get the correct answer for you.

  2. Ask your mother to check with Aetna's insurance plan.

It *is* possible for your mother to claim a married daughter as a dependent, but that means you and your husband CANNOT file as married filing jointly.  Given the cost of insurance (and the benefits of EIC and education credits), this is a big deal.

  3. No, not if you're married.

  4. No.  Once you're married, you are no longer her dependent.

And if the man you're going to marry can't support you, it's not a wise decision to marry him.   Either wait until YOU can support HIM, or find a grown up to marry.
