i always wondered if you can give music lessons or private tennis lessons without a degree and get paid. would you at least need a certificate of some sort or any permission? i don't know how it all works. of course you could give some friends some lessons. what about to the public?

  1. You could (without permission)- but people might want to know your credentials.  Personally, I wouldn't send my child to a voice teacher who didn't have a degree of some nature.  Other music lessons are a little different, but I would still want to know what qualifies the person to teach my child.

My best friend gives voice lessons out of her home.  She runs it as a private business making her self-employed. She doesn't have a degree in teaching but she does have a masters in vocal performance, and is an experienced opera singer.  She has had clients ask her for  references before.  When she first started she advertised on Craig's List and now has a full schedule.  She works mostly in the late afternoon to evening, and is busier during the school year as most of her clients go away for the summer.

Oh, I just remembered.  Before she started giving the lessons out of her home she rented a small space at a well known music store and began a client list there.  I don't think they required anything special from her to "teach".  But, I am not 100% sure.

Hope this has been a little helpful.

  2. Any school whether private/public requires good credentials ie certification and/or degree for teaching.  It's important.

  3. You do not need any certificates or formal education to have lessons. Although, having qualifications and a good resume will give you better clientele, hence, more money. It's all about how you market yourself.
