My 19 year old son has injured himself in week 9 of basic army training. He has 3 slipped discs, a stress fracture of his pelvis and dislocated his hip, he has 2 months to reach fitness level and continue or be discharged for a year to reapply from scratch. Will he be accepted into army training again having sustained these injuries, even if they settle down discs can pop out again can't they? I just worry he may cripple himself trying to get fit enough,he had signed up for 30 years so it is his dream, but are they stringing him along when they know he won't be reaccepted?

  1. He will be given a medical evaluation board. Since his injuries are service-connected, that board's report will go through the Army's disability evaluation system and he will be awarded a disability rating. If it is 30% or higher he will be disability retired from the Army with the pay of his rank and will retain all rights and privileges as if he had spent 20 years in the Army. If it is less than 30% he will be discharged with severance pay. Even if that occurs, he will be eligible for lifelong treatment through the VA as a service-connected disability case.

  2. i think 2 months is a good amount of time to get better as long as he follows the physio what you need to remember basic training is to get you ready so he does not have to be superman just have a certain level of fitness

if they have said they will accept him back then there should be no reason why they wont

  3. I've known several lads who have been through something similar, who discharged themselves to re-join later, but found out that they weren't able to pass the medical on selection, despite being promised that they would. The medical doctors at selection are strict, and it is only their opinion that matters when re-enlisting. I would highly recommend he stay in whilst he recovers. The worst case scenario is that he's discharged.

The medical doctors in basic are fantastic and will not let your son injure himself further through training. So don't worry about him crippling himself whilst trying to regain his fitness.
