Question:

Can you be adopted as an adult?

I was raised by my father and stepmother, my biological mother was a selfish joke. I'm now 29 with my own children and I still consider my stepmom to be my real mom. I've called her mom since I was 4, and that is the relationship we have.

I thought it might be nice if we could make it official by her adopting me. Is that even possible as an adult? And if I'm an adult would my biological mother have to give permission?

Thanks!

  1. Yes it is possible. I had a friend that was adopted at the age of 32.  You can go to the courthouse and ask them for the proper paperwork, or you can contact an adoption attorney, but they will be expensive.

  2. well these things usually occur when maybe in this case the mother would want 2 leave her heritage 2 u by legally adopting u, by this u can sew the thing that ur stepmother didn't leave u anything in her will

  3. As a consenting adult, you can choose to be adopted by any other consenting adult. The requirements vary a bit in different states but it's mostly paperwork. A family law attorney should be able to handle it pretty quickly and inexpensively.

  4. Yea, its very possible but whats the point really?

  5. in Wisconsin you can but not sure if that varies by state. Good luck and I do understand your situation. My 24 and 27 year old have discussed with same think about having my husband (their stepfather) adopt them also. and no, you need no ones permission except, yours, your stepmom and a judge. And as long as its all legal and you are not running from the law then the judge will agree with it.

  6. In most states, you can be adopted as an adult. Rhode Island is the only one that comes to mind that does not permit it unless the adult is mentally incapacitated.  I also don't know of any states that require a lawyer either - you just have to find the appropriate paperwork.  You need nobody's permission.  Contact the County Clerk and ask what you need to file.   Good for you and congratulations!   I know several people who were adopted as adults and they were all happy they did so.  Adoption by a stepparent who was not able to adopt the person as a child is one of the most common adult adoptions.

Be aware that should your biological mother become ill, you will no longer be legally able to make decisions for her as you  will no longer have any legal ties (some people don't realize this) unless stated in a medical directive.

  7. I would talk to the state people in the state you live in and see where they stand on the age of adoption. It sounds like a good thing you are trying to do and if I had to decide I would definitely allow you to be adopted. I'm not sure if it's possible though but you can't be sure unless you talk to someone who knows exactly. Good Luck!

  8. Yes you can, I don't know what state you live in but I know in California it is possible.
