Question:

Can you be allergic to long hair cats, but not short hair?

my boyfriend had brought home a new long hair kitty,

and i spent a lot of time over there and nothing seemed to happen.

he then had a little ant problem,

and i started getting these little red bumps all over my legs, stomach, and chest.

my mom thought i might have the chicken pox,

but we soon ruled that out and thought it was from the ants,

that they might have bitten me while i was sleeping.

i went to the emergency room, and they said they had no idea what it was,

but it was nothing to worry about.

the spots eventually went away, and i stopped hanging out at my boyfriends house.

my boyfriend has now given me his kitty,

and the bumps have come back.

the kitty slept in my bed last night,

and i woke up in the middle of the night and i could barely breath

because my nose was so stuffed up,

the bumps are everywhere and they're a lot worse than last time.

i already have two short hair cats,

and i've never had a problem with that.

is it possible to be allergic to long hair cats, but not to my short hair cats?

  1. Typically no.  When people are allergic to cats, it's actually the cat "dander" that causes the allergy.  Now it IS possible that a long haired cat may have more dander because they may be cleaning themselves more because of all of the fur...  Maybe try some Benadryl when you are there & see if that helps :)

    Good luck!!!

  2. well its not really the hair but the dander that people are allergic to. i have one long haired cat and one short haired. long haired cats are generally only worse for your allergies because they spread the dander more i guess. it is possible that when you were younger you had no allergies to cats but developed them later in life. i am allergic to cats (even though i have two, i keep the house clean and my allergies have pretty much adapted to those two specific cats even though other peoples cats give me bad reactions) and i have never broken out in bumps all over like that so i am wondering if maybe there's something wrong with that specific cat. i think you should take the cat to the vet and see if it might be making you sick. another possibility is that the cat has something on it that you are allergic to like a lot of dust in it's fur or it was washed with soap you are highly allergic to. i know that sounds stupid but it is a possibility. if your boyfriend can take the cat back it might be a good day. i think you should go to someone elses house with a long haired cat to see what happens (i know it sounds unpleasant but it will help you determine if you are allergic to long haired cats or just that one). try to work it out with your doctor and a vet, but if worst comes to worst you might just have to try to find the kitty a new home

  3. it has nothing to do with hairs of cat, u are allergic to allergen of that perticular cat, so try to kill that cat,, hey just kidding!

if allergy persists then try cetrizine 10 mg tab once a day for a week. or else change that kitty. meow..
