Can you be an Orthopedic doctor and not do surgery?

I would like to be an orthopedic doctor but not do surgery. I would like to know if there is such a position where I diagnos and treat injuries or what ever non surgically.

  1. MOST orthopedic doctors do surgery because that is where the money is. Sure you can be an orthopedist without having to do surgery.


  2. I guess you COULD, but why?  Orthopods LOVE to do surgery.  They spend almost every waking hour either in the OR, or trolling the ER looking for more patients to cut.

    You'll do pretty much nothing BUT surgery during your 5+ years of residency.  Most of the other stuff they do is seeing people before and after surgery.

    If you like bones and joints but are not interested in being a surgeon, consider physical therapy.
