Question:

Can you be forced into inpatient when you are an adult?

I have an eating disorder. I am going to a doctor on tues. And I was wondering if I could be "forced" to go into inpatient if I have health issues. I've actually been wanting to go in to IP, because I need to get better- and sometimes I feel that is the last resort- but I don't have insurance.

So since I am an adult, and have no insurance- I can't be forced? Correct?

  1. my experience has shown that if you pose a threat to yourself, the authorities will do what it takes to protect you.  this means yes, they can force you into a 3 day hospital stay in the psych ward (at least in IL they do).  if you have a simple eating disorder, chances are the won't but if you start to refuse to eat and are starving yourself, they might.  authorities do what it takes to protect a person whether they want the help or advise or not and they don't care about your ability to pay.  that's something that would have to worked out with the hospital.

  2. I've gone through the same thing -- still a bit painful, here is the resource help me a lot.http://heath-insurance.tips-free.info/he...

  3. No, you can't be forced.  However, if this is something that will be paid for you then jump on it.  I myself have no insurance and have been struggling with bulimia for over 10 years.  I know I need serious help but can't afford it.  Take care of yourself!

  4. No-one can be forced, but if you are seriously and delibrately putting your health at risk or have a severe mental health disorder which is causing hurt (whether phsyical or emotional) and if they think it's the only way to get you treatment then Yes, I believe they can.

Someone more professional on here may give you a more concrete answer though.

I wish you all the best though in your recovery x

  5. if they forced you , it would be on the national health and you would not have to pay. xx

  6. In some places you can be just for your well being and health at least you can in the U.S.

  7. Only if you life is coming close to ending because of it.

    Bananas

  8. As far as I know, you can be admitted to the hospital for up to 72 hours without your consent IF they feel your life is in IMMEDIATE danger.

Once in, they have 72 hours to A: get you to a point where you are no longer in danger or B: get a court order to keep you until you are no longer in danger.

If you are seriously considering going into IP to get help, then talk with the doctor.  I know in my area, mental health care is covered even if you don't have any insurance because the city thinks it is important for people to get help if they need it.  I also know that most mental hospitals will try to move heaven and earth to get the funding to help you.
