I have been practicing in my yard, and from last week to this week, major improvement has been made for preparing for the test. However, I noticed that my back wheel always tends to be out a little more than the front. Granted, my rear wouldn't be hanging in the street and would be in the space, but would I still probably be able to pass with that much or should I practice straightening out?

  1. in my state, the law is that you have to be parked within a foot of the curb... so, when you paralell park, you don't have to be straight, but both tires have to be less than a foot from the curb.

  2. In California there is a law that states that no part of the car shall be more than 18 inches from the curb in a paralell parked car.  The care does not have to be straight, since there is no regulation about the car having to be within any particular range of the rest of the side of the car.

Still, more practice coudln't hurt.  It is less important for ending up straight and more important for building up a skill and confidence level to help prepare for your test.

  3. As you steer in to the left moving very slowly, covering your brake, to straighten yourself along the curb, glance quickly in your passenger side mirror, and when your vehicle looks straight, then straighten your wheels to the right,(about 1-1/2 turns) while backing and shift to park and set your parking brake, when you can just see the bottom of the rear tires of the car ahead of you.

  4. As long as you are 6 to 8 inches from the curb, otherwise you will fail...

  5. As long as you end up in the designated space,  perfection isn't required.
